Intermediary announcement of “student energy challenge” competition

“Student Energy Challenge” competition poses a challenge for the students of Kazakh technical universities to present creative ideas for improving or creating a new technology/technology component, product or service that would help to meet the global need to find more solutions for the cleaner future energy.

According to the stages of the competition, we expect submission of the project works by the teams within the short-list by August 20, 2017:

  1. “Triple E” team (Nazarbayev University, theme: “Increase of energy efficiency and energy saving in the household and commercial use”);
  2. “BlackDiamond” team (Kazakh-British Technical University, theme: “Increase of energy efficiency and energy saving in the household and commercial use”);
  3. “Creative union” team (North Kazakhstan State University named after M. Kozybayev, theme: “Increase of energy efficiency and energy saving in the household and commercial use”);
  4. “Callisto” team (Almaty University of Power Engineering and Telecommunications, theme: “Increase of energy efficiency and energy saving in the household and commercial use”);
  5. “NU Arlans” team (Nazarbayev University, theme: “Reduction of carbon dioxide emissions in transportation, power generation, construction of buildings, use of energy at home or in food supplies”);
  6. “Synergy” team (Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, theme: “Alternative energy generation from unconventional sources”);
  7. “22A Satpayev st.” team (Kazakh National Research Technical University named after K.I. Satpayev, theme: “Alternative energy generation from unconventional sources”);
  8. “Next generation” team (Caspian State University of Technologies and Engineering named after Sh. Yessenov, theme: “Alternative energy generation from unconventional sources”).

In order to provide quality evaluation of works of the teams, competent jury is formed. Karabalin U.S., Deputy Chairman of KAZENERGY Association, and Zolotukhin A.B., Adviser at the Administration of the Russian State University of Oil and Gas named after I.M. Gubkin, confirmed their participation as part of the judge. Experts from Shell Kazakhstan and “Samruk-Energy” JSC are also expected.

Eight teams, selected for participation in the next stages of the competition, will present their project works on September 7. From among these eight teams, the three strongest teams will continue their participation in the final stage in Astana on September 8 at the IX Youth Forum “Learning for life”, which is part of the XI KAZENERGY Eurasian Forum within the framework of EXPO-2017.

In order to assist the teams in forming the right approach to defense of their projects in elevator pitch style, it is planned to hold the last webinar from the series of workshops on the topic “Attention. Time. Pitch” under “Nazarbayev University” on August 25, 2017.

The team, which will be determined the winner by the jury's decision, will be awarded a prize of 10000 EUR from “Shell Kazakhstan” company, as well as technical and business workshops from expert mentors. The teams which took the second and the third places will receive cash prizes of 5000 and 3000 EUR respectively, as well as the sessions with mentors.
