Murat Zhurinov was born on December 7, 1941 in the city of Aris in South Kazakhstan region. He graduated from the Kazakh Chemical Technological Institute, and then got postgraduate degree at the Moscow Chemical Technological Institute named after D. Mendeleyev.
From 1982 to 1985 he worked as Vice-Rector of Karaganda State University.
From 1985 to 1991 he was Director of the Institute of organic synthesis and coal chemistry of the Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh SSR.
From 1991 to 1995 – Rector of the Turkestan State University named after Ahmed Yassawi.
From 1995 to 1997 – Minister of Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
From 1997 to 2001 – President of the International Kazakh-Turkish University named after K.A.Yassawi.
In 2001-2007 he worked as Director of the Institute of Organic Catalysis and Electrochemistry named after D.V.Sokolsky.
Over the period from 2010 till 2014 he worked as Vice-Rector for science of the Kazakh-British Technical University.
From 2013 to the present time Mr. Zhurinov is the Director General of the Institute of fuel, catalysis and electrochemistry named after D.V.Sokolsky.
From 2003 to the present time he is the President of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
Being the Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Doctor of Chemistry, Professor M.Zhurinov is a member of the National Council of the Republic of Kazakhstan for UNESCO, the Higher Scientific and Technical Commission of the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Public Chamber under the Majilis of Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Board of the Ministry of Education and Science, Adviser to the Prime Minister of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
M. Zhurinov published more than 700 scientific papers, including 17 monographs, 120 inventor’s certificates and patents. 32 candidates of sciences, 7 doctors of sciences were prepared under his supervision.
He was awarded with the order of “Parasat” (2005), the Order of “Barys” of III degree (2011), the Gold Medal of the University of Tokyo (2001), the Gold Medal of scientific and production association of France (Paris, 2003), the Gold Medal of the “Golden Fortune” association under the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (2006), the Badge of Honor of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences (2013), the Letter of Gratitude of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev (2015). He is the Laureate of the State Prize of the Republic of Kazakhstan in the field of science, technology and education (2003), the International Prize of the Turkic world (Ankara, 2001).
